Chronic Absenteeism Remains High in Urban Districts

New RAND research finds that while chronic absenteeism has improved since pandemic peaks, it remains above pre-pandemic norms. In the 2024–25 school year, 30% or more of students in urban districts missed 10% or more of school days—roughly five to six times higher than in rural and suburban districts. The data suggests continued high absenteeism is concentrated in nearly half of urban districts.
